A little birthday trip for one to Riga anyone? This was the first time doing a complete trip alone apart from if you include living abroad as part of my degree!
I couldn’t have picked a nicer city for my first proper solo trip. I stayed at the Rixwell Old Riga Palace Hotel and it was the best hotel room I have ever stayed in. It was only 33€ a night with a great breakfast included and free mini bottle of Riga wine in my room on arrival!
I digress. Back to the city itself… You can walk from one end of the old town to the other in 20 minutes and around every corner is another picture perfect scene. There are plenty of cafés to choose from on varying levels of hipster. Went to a café called Apsara Tea House where the seating is in a circular layout and you sit on the ‘floor’ facing outwards and you can people watch for hours through the floor to ceiling windows. Surrounded by a million cushions I spent and hour and a half soaking up the greenhouse-inducing heat and free wifi!
I went to Fat Pumpkin for one meal and was pleasantly surprised by their full vegetarian/vegan menu, even the mayo was vegan! The ‘chips’ were slices of fried potato and were the definite highlight for me.
The supermarkets were also full of treats as always, various pastries and the usual mainland European delights you don’t get in the UK.
I went on a walking tour by Riga Free Tour and our guide Anna was lovely, I learnt so much about the city. Made some friends and had lunch with them in a local pub and tried some local Latvian cuisine, grey peas in beer anyone?! I also went to the Latvian Occupation Museum which for someone who usually abhors museums, this was completely captivating. I had no idea of the atrocities the Baltic states went through.
All in all, there is something for everyone in this city: gorgeous architecture, museums, parks, the Latvian Laima chocolate, the horrific Black Balzam liqueur, markets, churches and more!
You only need a weekend here to experience the delights, so go ahead and treat yourself to a little Latvian break!
